Re: DMV Issues POW-MIA Licnse Plates
Date: November 09, 2000
POW-MIA License Plates Available for Virginia Residents - Read On -
Attention Virginia Residents On February 15, 2000 Senate Bill SB122 was passed through the State Senate and House of Delegates. This bill allows for the production of special license plates with the POW/MIA logo to be produced and sold through the D.M.V. Governor Gilmore signed this bill into law on March 24th and it became effective on July 1, 2000.
Before production of the new license plates can begin, we must have 350 prepaid applications from Virginia residents. We need your help. Please pass this information along to your family, friends, and veteran's organizations in your community. Any Virginia Resident that wants to show their support can purchase this plate.
The POW/MIA flag was designed by the National League of POW/MIA on behalf of American POW/MIAs from the Vietnam War. Since then the POW/MIA flag has been declared "Public Domain" and now represents all American's POW/MIA from all wars.

Q: Can I have a POW/MIA Logo plate for my motorcycles?
A: Not at this time.
Q: Can I still a POW/MIA Logo Handicap Plate?
A: Yes, Virginia DMV will provide these plates.
Q: Can I still have my personalized characters on this new plate? A: Yes, as long as there are only 6 characters. Just indicate on the application that the personalized characters are transferred from your present plate.
Q: Why can't I send the application in to DMV directly?
A: Virginia DMV requires the sponsor of the Plate to collect the first 350 pre-paid applications. The sponsor then will submit the applications with one payment for all applicants. At that time DMV will start production of the POW/MIA Specialty License Plate.
Q: On the application I can order Sample Plates? Does this count toward the 350 initial applications?
A: No. Sample Plates will only be issued after the initial 350 are produced.
Q: How can I verify this is a legitimate project?
A: You can call DMV at 804-367-0029. Ask to speak with Bonnie Hutchison.
Q: Our membership wants to order a large number of Specialty Plates? Do we each have to send a check.
A: Your organization, if they want to assist, can collect the pre-paid applications and send them in one mailing with a check to cover all with one check or money order.
Q: How can I find out how close we are to production?
A: You can call Rolling Thunder® Inc. Virginia Chapter 2's Mailbox provided by the Daily Press at 928-1111 Box number 5641 for updated reports.
