Re: Conference Appointments
Date: August 01, 2000
CONFERENCE APPOINTMENT
(Senate amendment to H.R. 4205)
The Committee on Armed Services conference member have been selected for consideration of the House bill HR 4205, and the Senate bill 2549 amendments. Section 1045 of the Senate bill will authorize the Operational Files of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) to be withheld from public disclosure to the same extent that CIA files are withheld under the National Security Act of 1947. If this section is included in the final Defense Authorization Act for 2001 the DIA covert Operations will be withheld for periods of 10 years subject to the approval of only the Secretary of Defense. POW/MIA covert operations since the Vietnam War will never be released. The costs of the Freedom of Information Act will be greatly increased by the section.
