"ICRC says Iran frees 450 Iraqi war prisoners
GENEVA, June 29 (Reuters) - Iran has released 450 Iraqi prisoners of war, bringing the number it has freed this year to 3,389, the International Committee of the Red Cross said on Thursday.
In a statement, the Geneva-based humanitarian agency said that the Iraqis were released under its auspices at the Mundharieh-Khosravi checkpoint on the two countries' common border on Wednesday.
The Swiss-run ICRC said that it had supervised the repatriation of more than 97,400 prisoners of war since the Iran-Iraq conflict broke out in 1980.
Since the end of the Iran-Iraq war in 1988, the ICRC Cross said that 9,900 Iraqi prisoners of war had returned to Iraq and three Iranian prisoners of war and 369 Iranian civilian detainees had returned to Iran.
A further 6,700 Iraqi prisoners of war living in Iran have said that they do not wish to be repatriated, the agency added. "
