Re: Family and Veterans Visit North Korea
Date: October 20, 1998
A four-day visit to North Korea by family members and veterans will observe excavation operations searching for American servicepersonnel unaccounted-for from the Korean War.
In a repeat of an October 1997 visit, two Korean-Cold War Family groups, Coalition of of Korean War Families and the Association of Korean War Families, the Chosin Few and several veterans groups will send members. The excavation operation consists of a joint recovery team from the US and North Korea, and is the fifth and final of the year.
With over 8,100 US personnel unaccounted for from the 'Forgotten War', only 13 sets of possible US remains have been recovered and repatriated. This effort comes on the heels of the escape of the South Korean POW who claims South Korean POW remain alive and in captivity, 45 years after the end of hostilities.
