Re:China Gets National Security Info While Families Get Stonewalled
Date: December 31, 1998
What's wrong with this picture?
For nearly 30 years, US POW-MIA families have been presented with brick walls of silence, ledgerdemain and the veil of National Security, preventing disclosure or sharing of documents, live sighting reports, foreign intelligence and reports. On this, the last day of the year we now learn that while POW-MIA family members remain a risk to National Security if they should hear or see something with respct to their loved ones, apparently the Communist Chinese are not.
While Earl Hopper Sr. is on television speaking of the unwillingness and inability of the US to make material available to the family on their son, Earl Hopper Jr., the Congress is speaking of the US sale/transfer to Communist China of sensitive technology... military and satellite technology.
You can't make stuff like this up.
Over the years the famous cry of the Pentagon pundits has been, among other things, that disclosure of certain information to family members presented a National Security risk. That family members may infer the technology used to gather certain information. As stated previously, we know of no family member that is interested in inferring anything other than the truth about their unaccounted-for loved ones. Yet, under this Badministration, anything that is not nailed down is apparently available for sale and the names Lippo and China interestingly come up all too often. Since many saw a pattern in the Clinton White Wash House to relax laws and transfer technology data for campaign contributions, a bipartisan committee was convened.
A special House Committee, the House Select Committee on U.S. National Security and Military-Commercial Concerns with the People's Republic of China, after closed Hearings over a six-month priod, produced a CLASSIFIED 700-page report... only portions of which may be released in several months. While Earl Hopper spoke of the inability of family members to view materials and get answers, a Congressional Spokesman spoke of the following:
"I can't say anything beyond this: We discovered areas of significant transfers of technology that were adverse to U.S. security interests."- Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash
"These transfers are not limited to missile technology, but cover militarily significant technologies." Also stated was China had continued through nearly four Badministrations in a "serious and sustained" effort to gain access to sensitive technology of the US.- Rep. Chris Cox, R-Calif.,Chairman of the Select Committee
"All I can say is that there has been a pattern of effort by the Chinese for the past 20 years that has led to their acquiring technology," and "They have used every means at their behest. They have done everything they can. Because of our focus on the Soviet Union and its allies, we were not as cognizant as we should have been about technology exports to China." said Dicks.
Among those cited in the report as Chinese targets are Loral Space & Communications Corp, and Hughes Electronics Corp.. The Hughes name should send up red flags, and it has been discovered that Clinton's election campaign for 1996 received some hefty help from Loral senior executives. A Pentagon classified report (aren't they all?) apparently discusses the Hughes folks as providing assistance to the Chinese after a Chinese rocket crash among other things.
So, while families are forced to sit by and watch the neverending DOD scavenger hunt for artifacts and effects, the US happily transfers sensitive technology to the Chinese (and heaven knows who else) that ultimately imperils the National Security that is so greedily protected when a family member asks to see a satellite image that spells out their loved one's name.
The families paid for this information with the loss of their sons, brothers, fathers and husbands... this price far exceeds the cash contributions that China has provided, yet this Badministration obviously puts a higher value on Communist China's checkbook than the sacrifice of men and women abandoned to the jungles of Southeast Asia so many years ago.
