MARINES AND SAILORS HOLD PRAYER SERVICE
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- A private prayer service will be held at 2 p.m. today aboard USS Bonhomme Richard for the Marines and Sailors of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Media will not be invited to attend due to limited transportation.
A Marine helicopter, assigned to the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 166 and attached to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, crashed 14 miles off the coast of Point Loma, Calif. at about 1:18 p.m. yesterday while training for an upcoming six-month deployment.
The CH-46 Sea Knight was flying from the USS Bonhomme Richard to the USNS Pecos during a routine training mission. Eleven Marines have been rescued, and transported to the USS Bonhomme Richard. Three were moved to U.S. Navy Hospital Balboa.
The Navy and Marine Corps continue their search and rescue efforts. The names of the Marines are being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.
