Keeping the Promise: Gov. Gray Davis Proclaims ''POW/MIA Recognition Day'' in California

State Veterans Affairs Secretary Tomas Alvarado today announced that Gov. Gray Davis has proclaimed Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, as "POW/MIA Recognition Day" in California.

P R O C L A M A T I O N

Governor of the State of California

WHEREAS, the history of this nation has been shaped by brave men and women in the Armed Forces who have answered the call of America*s highest duty; and

WHEREAS, while we honor our veterans for their strength, service and sacrifice, it is equally important to remember service people who remain unaccounted for and are missing in action; and

WHEREAS, there are still thousands of American military personnel whose whereabouts remain unknown; and

WHEREAS, the families of these courageous soldiers deserve to know that America has not forgotten their outstanding contributions to this nation; and

WHEREAS, each year, citizens across the country join together in remembrance of these missing individuals and to reaffirm America*s commitment to finding POWs and MIAs;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GRAY DAVIS, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim September 17, 1999 as POW/MIA Recognition Day in California.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 8th day of September 1999.
