Re: Katyn Massacre Remebered

Date: April 18, 1999

Almost 60 years ago, tens of thousands of Polish POWs were executed under orders of the murderous Bolshevik leader, Josef Stalin. POW camps were virtually emptied of Polish officers, who were then transported to the Katyn Forest, mowed down and turned under in mass graves.

As early as 1943, German authorities mentioned the mass executions, believed to have as many as 21,000 victims, but the former USSR denied, denied, denied. It was not until 1990 that Mikhail Gorbachev eventually admitted Soviet responsibility.

On every April 14th, the anniversary of the massacre is memorialized at the monument to those who perished.
