Re: China Asked to account for POWs Schedule

Date: April 08, 1999

Amidst accusations of stolen technology and spies, the issue of American POWs in China has received minimal coverage in the mainstream media. But, the question is being asked of China, and we should demand a response.

Washington is reported to have requested an accounting by China of 'several Americans missing from the Korean War.' Although it's a good place to start, let us not limit ourselves to just 'several.'

According to press reports, three particular men, Roger Dumas, William Glasser and Richard Desautels, all of whom were KNOWN ALIVE as POWs in Chinese operated camps, have been brought up again. They were repirted ALIVE and well by returning POWs in 1953. The Chinese have restricted access to their wartime records under the guise of them being classified or the issue of 'wartime losses' a closed one. In addition to China running a majority of the northern POW camps, it is known that China transferred US POWs to its territory to interrofate these men. First-hand testimony, reports and recently declassified US documents prove this to be true.

In addition to the aforementioned men, others are being inquired about. They are - Robert Snoddy and Norman Schwartz, who went missing when their C-47 was downed over Manchuria, 29 NOC 52 (John Downey and Richard Fecteau, CIA officers who were onboard, survived and were captured, held as POWs and returned) and George Davis and Troy Cope, two USAF pilots whose dog tags may be in a museum in Shanghai. It is patently clear that China has much information on Prisoner and Missing personnel. It is also patently clear that the US has persistently permistted 'other' issues to obfuscate and derail any demand for POW accounting when it comes to China and the former Soviet Union. There is proof POWs survived well into captivity under the watch of China and Russia. There is proof that men were interrogated by these third-party nations and some transferred. There is proof that these nations have archives and musuems that would answer many, many questions. And that is the case with China.

There is filmed footage of POWs in captivity - 'Jiaoliang' of US Korean War POWs in China; The Andong Military Museum where US POWs were interrogated by the Chinese; and another in Shanghai. Information, documents and personal effects are believed to be held there.Burial records, wartime camp records, Chinese Unit records that indicate the Units controlling the camps around battlefields.
