Re: Primate of Orthodox Church Appeals for Mercy

Date: April 06, 1999

His Eminence, Archbishop Christodulous, has appealed for merciful treatment of the 3 US POWs captured and held by Yugloslavia.

The head of the Orthodox Church of Greece has personnally appealed to Yugoslav leader, Slobodan Milosevic. The Primate wrote that the three young soldiers were simply, "... obeying the orders of their superiors." He called for mercy at the beginning of this Orthodox Holy Week and Pascha. The letter was delivered on Friday morning before Yugoslavia was alleged to have started trial proceedings against the captive men. At this writing, there is no news as to whether proceedings took place afterwards.

"Everybody hopes that peace will prevail and that the Serbs, ethnic Albanians, Europeans and Americans will all return to their homes and families," Christodoulos said."
