Re: Russia Returns Japanese POW Remains

Date: August 19, 1997

Ria Novosti reports that Russia is undertaking the exhumation and cremation of Japanese POW remains in the Khabarovsk territory.

During the 1950's (Korea-Cold War) a POW camp was located in he region. POWs did manual labor and upon death were buried in a special cemetery. According to an agreement between Japan and Russia, the remains are being excavated, cremated and returned to Japan.

Additional camps located in the former Soviet Far East are to be excavated as well.

Note from AII POW-MIA: If Russia is so capable of locating Japanese POW remains in 'special cemeteries' it is not inconceivable that they could locate US POW remains, or for that matter, US POWs. Numerous documents and reports tell us of US personnel and materiel in the former USSR. It stands to reason that prisoners and technology of such importance were cared for and tracked. Perhaps the dismantling of JCSD and the Russia group is to prevent such 'embarassing' truths from being known.

The question becomes, if the Japanese could get such an agreement, then why not the US? The answer... they probably don't want to know... or, they already know and don't want US to know.
