Re: U.S.S. Higgins Christened
Date: October 05, 1997
With the words, "In the world, semper fidelis, always faithful, I christen thee, Higgins," the widow of the murdered prisoner christened the Navy's newest destroyer.
After joining the USMC in 1967, Rich Higgins served 2 tours in Vietnam and eventually made his way to serve as a Colonel in Lebanon. He was kidnapped while on tour in Lebanon, and held prisoner. A year later the shocking video of his limp body, hanging from a makeshift gallows haunted the world.
Now, eight years later, his memory - his name - perhaps the very essence of what Colonel Higgins was about, will forever be honored wherever his namesake sails.
May she be as faithful as he.
