Re: Travis AFB Ends Homecming Honor Guard
Date: April 08, 1997
Stating that speedy return of recovered remains and port mortuary closure as the reason, Travis AFB announced it will cease it's military honor guard repatriation duties for returning MIAs.
"It is quicker for the family. It is a better service for the family and it also saves the government money." Said Army Lt. Col. Ted Leemann of Casualty and Mortuary Affairs.
Travis, which welcomed home recovered remains from three wars, held monthly ceremonies the past several years. The ceremonies were attended by veterans and AD personnel stationed at Travis.
Once Travis ceases MIA repatriation ceremonies, remains will be commercially shipped from CIL-HI directly to the families.
