Re: Cold War POW Search Turns Cold
Date: July 1, 1997
Even with all the reports, testimonies and documents stating that American POWs were transferred to the former Soviet Union, the US delegation currently in Russia says they 'can't confirm the suspicion.'
Malcolm Toon was quoted, "Given the nature of the relationship between North Korea and the Soviet Union, the Soviets must have gotten their hands on some Americans, but we can't find anything in the archives." Toon is the Co-Chairman of the US-Russian Commission on POWs-MIAs, which is expected to return from Russia this week.
The Commission is 'investigating' the fate of Korean War POWs and MIAs and 10 Cold War shootdowns that account for 90 missing crewmen.
It is amazing that we are literally falling over mountains of material, we have former Soviet officials, such as Malinin who stated he saw a US POW in captivity in Russia years after his disappearance from a North Korean battlefield, and interrogations of Americans in captivity, yet the Commission says they can't find anything in the archives. Where on earth are they looking?
Given the massive amount of material documented by the Soviets, it is a safe bet there are countless unknown archives. And, after Dr. Stephen Morris found the 1205 Document, one can be certain that many sensitive records have been purged or made off-limits in the known archives.
With news that the US, Korea and North Korea will begin a protracted peace talk process perhaps this message from the USG is the signal that nothing embarrassing to North Korea and Russia will be made public. It appears our Peace Accord negotiators just got a green light.
