Re: Peterson Visits Crash Site

Date: June 06, 1997

The first ambassador to communist Vietnam since the war, visited an excavation site during a search for American remains.

The crash site is that of an A1-H bomber lost on 10 June 1965 in Tranh Hoa Province. Suspected remains have been located, along with personal effects.

This was Peterson's first visit to an excavation, and technicians at the site presented Peterson with a brick from the old Hanoi Hilton.

Peterson told reporters present that "the search for America's war dead ought to continue for 100 years." "This isn't something we're going to walk away from. This is a commitment," he said. "It won't be done perhaps at the same level, but we're going to continue to do this because it's part of history and we want to continue to make the discoveries that's out there."

It is interesting to note that in recent years, the powers-that-be have removed the word POW from all references to POW-MIA. Now, with Peterson in place, we do not even hear MIA uttered... just 'war dead.'
