Re: North Korean POWs

Date: June 24, 1997

North Korea - Pyongyang has once again reported that former soldiers of the Korean People's Army remain prisoner in South Korea.

In a joint letter we are told: "... we hold that the U.S., one side of the Korean War, should pay due attention to them and exert full influence upon the south Korean authorities with a view to settling their repatriation issue. We are convinced that their repatriation will have good influence on detente in the Korean Peninsula and improvement of relations between the DPRK and U.S."

Nowhere in the letter do we find any mention of American Prisoners and Missing, of which approxiamtely 8,200 remain unaccounted for. If North Korea can meticulously keep track of their men after nearly 50 years, is it presumptuous to think they could account for at least some of these thousands of Americans?

Being that this month is the 47th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War, we can expect more from North Korea in the weeks to come.
