Re: The Elephant Returns Through The Crack

Date: January 11, 1997

In a scheduled November 1994 meeting held at the White House and attended by Carol Hrdlicka, George Carver, Barry Toll, Anthony Lake and Kent Wiedemann, evidence was presented puttting forth the case of "live" prisoners of war still held by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

One of the areas covered during this meeting was satillite imagery. One of the participants, Anthony Lake, was already familiar with the recent imagery which had been made public.

Promises were made that evening that the material presented would be evaluated and investigated and that a response would be forthcoming. No response has been received.

On December 3, 1996, President Clinton nominated Anthony Lake to be Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. We believe this is NOT in the best interest of the American people.

The following background information will best illustrate our opposition to the confirmation of Anthony Lake as director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Anthony Lake served as a Foreign Service Officer from 1962-1970. His assignments included U.S. Vice Consul in Saigon (1963), U.S. Vice Consul in Hue (1964-65) and Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs on Henry Kissinger's staff (1969-70).

It was in 1967 that Defense Secretary Robert McNamara commissioned Anthony Lake, Morton Halperin and Leslie Gelb under the supervision of Assistant Secretary of Defense, Paul Warnke to assemble official records on U.S. involvement in Vietnam. This Vietnam Task Force comprised the "Pentagon Papers" study team which had access to many top-secret documents.

It was Anthony Lake and Leslie Gelb who signed off on the release of the Pentagon Papers to Daniel Ellsberg, who in turn leaked them to the Institute for Policies Studies and eventually to the New York Times and Washington Post.

In 1970, Anthony Lake resigned from Nixon's national security staff over the U.S. bombing of Cambodia. He then began working on the 1972 presidential campaign of Senator Edmund Muskie. After Muskie dropped out of the race, Lake joined the McGovern campaign. It was here that he met fellow McGovernites Hillary Rodham and Bill Clinton.

From 1977-81, Anthony Lake served as the Director of Policy Planning Staff for the Carter State Department. What influence did Lake orchestrate in the Carter decision to issue a "presumptive finding of death" for all the prisoners of war/missing in\ action unaccounted for from the Vietnam War?

While serving on the board of directors of the Center for International Policy, Anthony Lake was an associate of Orlando Letelier, the notorious Chilean agent of the Soviet KGB and Cuban DGI. Lake and Letelier were also connected with the Institute for Policy Studies, a Marxist think tank with numerous ties to communist intelligence agencies. Why would Anthony Lake be associated with these groups?

While serving as director of President Carter's State Department Policy Planning Staff, why did Anthony Lake hire Richard Feinberg? Feinberg had just resigned from the Treasury Department to avoid investigation into his own involvement with the Letelier network. What was Anthony Lake's connection to the radicial activist Elizabeth Farnsworth?

While serving as National Security Advisor for President Clinton, why did Anthony Lake along with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Chairman Shalikashvili and others secretly visit Cuba in 1995? A videotape of this meeting between U.S. offficials and top Castro officials was obtained by Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Belart (R-FL). According to Belart, distraught Cuban refugees meeting with Lake and Shalikashvili at Guantanamo "are shown being informed that they are to be returned to Castro's Security Forces." Why?

In addition, Cuban General Perez Perez is shown being honored by the U.S. team and "a detailed military map of the Guantanamo Base is given to Perez Perez." Why?

These are questions which MUST be addressed to and answered by Anthony Lake.

Lake is a committed globalist. He has suggested that our military forces should be used to "defend our economic interests," worldwide. We tried this recently in Somalia with the loss of life and we left a humiliated nation.

If confirmed as director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Lake will be in a position to carry out his agenda covertly. And this, we believe will be bad for America and its military.

We urge you to contact your federal state senators and ask that they vote NO on the Lake nomination. We also ask that you contact Senator Richard C. Shelby, Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence which will be handling the Lake nomination.
