Re: US Seeks Pol Pot's Extradition

Date: June 23, 1997

After a formal announcement from the joint Cambodian governmtn that mass-murderer Pol Pot was ill with malaria, but detained, a number of nations have made their feelings known.

Communist Vietnam stated on Saturday that the entire matter was the decision of the Cambodian people.

Cambodia stated that the despot would be turned over for an international tribunal.

Now, the US has requested that Canada use it's genocide extradition powers to insure that the Khmers Rouges leader goes before a World Court.

Only Denamrk and Canada have laws that allow them to extradite individuals accused of genocide. If Canada acquiesces, the US, according to news reports, is willing to send a military team to Cambodia to remove Pol Pot from Anlong Veng. He would them be transportedto Canada and held until an international tribunal could be established.

It should be noted that Pol Pot was tried - in absentia - in Cambodia in 1979, and found guilty. However, neither Cambodia NOR an International Tribunal have the powers to impose a death sentence at the present time based on the previous guilty verdict.
