Re: DPMO June 1997

Date: June 16, 1997

The following is a summary of Defense POW-MIA Update material recently posted:

Korea-Cold War Archives are now available to the public. The material is being held in College Park, Maryland, and appears to have a fairly extensive look into the inner workings of the Eisenhower Badministration.

To arrange use of the archives, contact -
Mr. Rich Boylan at (301) 713-7250.

The US and Russia Joint Commission on POW-MIA Affairs have set 30 June - 02 July as the meeting dates for the next Plenary to be held in Russia.

In addition to Russia, visits to former Eastern Bloc Poland and Czechoslovakia are planned. The US wishes to gain access to the archives of both countries. (Note from AII: For further info read Corso, Sejna and Douglass.)

Wold returns from SEA. After visiting Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, Wold will present his findings during the Annual Briefing held in Washington, DC, this week. Among the points he is supposed to cover - Archival research, especially in Cambodia; unilateral and archival research in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia; and a summary of each of the country's level of cooperation ('superb'?).

Wold accompanied Peterson and the JTF-FA Commander to a joint field recovery in Vietnam. As noted previously, it was Peterson's first visit to a field excavation since becoming ambassador to Vietnam.

Commencing 25 June, the 5th US-Lao joint recovery operation is scheduled to operate in Northern and Southern Laos until 27 July.
