Missed Opportunities Conference
June 20, 1997
With a room full of US think-tankers and policy makers in Hanoi, there has been no mention in the press of US POW and MIAs.
Although McNamara and some high-level Vietnamese counterparts are present, the discussions seem to be completely strategic in nature. It is interesting to note that with all the activity in SEA, ambassadors, elections, more USG people in Hanoi than you can shake a stick at, 2 Joint Field Investigations, the Pol Pot-Cambodia crisis, there has been virtually nothing reported on the issue.
So typical.
Next week, Secretary of State Albright is scheduled to meet with the Vietnamese to discuss various issues including trade, human rights and, at the very end, missing men. What a pity that our 'Highest National Priority' is always relegated to the bitter end, almost as an after thought.
